Matt Clark-Manager, Group Tickets & Hospitality at San Diego Padres
Matt Clark graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a degree in sports management. He started out in the field of being a supervisor for the soccer team, and on the side was a sports writer. Later he received an internship to go and work for the Scranton Wilkes-berry Rail Riders the Triple A affiliate of the New York Yankees working throughout the department. He then moved on to the University of Texas working in their athletic department. After a few years at Texas Matt moved on to the San Antonio Spurs working in the sales department for six to seven months. After the short stint he went and worked for the Cleveland Indians in the Ticket Sales department. He then moved out to San Diego to work in the role he currently is working for.
Matt's job is to oversee and manage all of the group sales. This means that he oversees the majority of the reps and assists them throughout the selling process and comes up with different ways to approach group sales. This comes into Matt training new and older employees throughout the years on newer ways to approach the selling methods. Throughout the season and off season Matt has to do research and look at all the reports throughout the year to generate revenue as best as possible. The goal is to sell all premium tickets to people throughout the year. Matt's motto is the sky is the limit for selling group tickets throughout the year for the Padres. His job takes on a lot of collaboration meetings with the other departments throughout the park to figure out game day activities for the visitors for the day such as catering, baseball operations, and the hospitality team as well.
Matt faces many challenges throughout the day. The first challenge is the San Diego Padres has the largest group sales department in the entire MLB which makes it difficult to oversee all of the moving parts throughout the day and season. The second challenge is taking certain ideas and actually implementing them throughout the day. The third challenge that Matt discussed was the individual meetings because you have to asses each person for who they are and how they respond to certain situations. So as the manager he needs to know each employee and the characteristics of them before he brings them in for an individual meeting to discuss improvements and how they were going to attack the area of development.
The main things that really came out of the meetings was to stay persistent on your passion and stay focused on the ending goal. Matt emphasized that he didn't know what he wanted to do but found a passion and stuck to it and has really built up his professional career and works for an amazing organization. The biggest key for Matt was to talk and build relationships and go to career fairs as much as possible.
